What is a bunion?

A bunion is an inflamed, bony bump at the base of your big toe or little toe. Bunions make wearing shoes uncomfortable and cause pain with every step.

We offer a variety of treatments for this condition, ranging from cortisone injections and taping to bunion surgery. Stop by one of our offices in Blue Ash, OH; Cincinnati, OH; or Franklin, OH, for effective treatment.

What Causes Bunions?

While people commonly associate bunions with the elderly, this condition affects patients of all ages. That said, if you suffer from arthritis, you might be more susceptible to developing bunions. Other risk factors for this condition include:

  • Wearing shoes that are too small
  • Wearing high heels
  • Having a genetic predisposition

Note that wearing shoes doesn’t cause bunions, but your footwear may worsen an existing hereditary defect. If you are unable to wear shoes without pain, our podiatrists can recommend orthotics that will help relieve some of the pressure on your toe.

Is Bunion Surgery Right for Me?

Bunion surgery involves removing tissue – and, in some cases, bone – to help straighten your toe. Not all patients need surgery though. Many people are able to manage their pain effectively with new shoes, orthotics, and taping or splinting. Bunion surgery is often the last resort.

Our knowledgeable podiatrists can help you decide if you’re a good candidate for bunion surgery. Typically, we recommend surgery if the angle between the bones of the big toe is greater than 12 percent.

What Can I Expect After Bunion Surgery?

As with any surgery, you’ll need time to recover from bunion removal. Full recovery may take 6 months to a year, but you’ll start feeling better within a month or two. For the first few weeks, you’ll need to wear a cast or protective shoe over the treated foot. We’ll also prescribe pain medication to make recovery more comfortable.
